NSAIDs Review Form
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are typically prescribed for arthritis and pain. The main types of NSAIDs include:
- ibuprofen
- naproxen
- diclofenac
- celecoxib
- mefenamic acid
- etoricoxib
- indomethacin
NSAIDs can cause some problematic side effects. It is best to try alternatives where possible. However, if you are on NSAIDs you need to be aware of the following:
- Try to take the lowest dose, for the shortest time and only if the pain requires it. Recommended lowest doses are: Ibuprofen 200mg, Naproxen 250mg, Diclofenac 50mg
- If you can use paracetamol or a NSAID cream or gel
- NSAIDs can cause stomach problems, including ulcers. If you are on an NSAID long term speak with your clinician as you may need to take medication to protect your stomach from the NSAID.
- Call the surgery if you have stomach pain or bleeding.
- Stop taking the NSAID if you are sick
- If you have heart, liver or kidney problems the NSAID may make them worse. Tell the surgery if you experience any changes to these conditions whilst you are on the NSAID
